Who's telling little girls
That their suffering is generous,
That to betray their intelligence
Is to be good -
That leaving their bodies
For the pleasure of another
Is as natural as a dance
As a daisy unfolding in sunlight?

Who's telling them
That beauty is something that shrinks,
And is to be measured by any eye
But their own?

Who's telling them
Their only power is sacrifice
And to wear scars of martyrdom
Like an ice-cream parlour punchcard
That the world is a loyal customer

Who's telling little girls
That their suffering is generous?
